B5 PLUS Pays GH¢400m In Tax To GRA

B5 Plus Company Limited, a leading Ghanaian iron and steel manufacturer, has made a substantial tax payment of GH¢400 million to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). This significant contribution has brought renewed focus to the importance of domestic revenue mobilization as Ghana aims to enhance its capacity to fund development from its own resources. The payment, made by the company, chaired by Mr Mukesh Thakwani, has underscored the crucial role businesses play in financing the nation's progress.

Dr. Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, Commissioner of the GRA's Domestic Tax Revenue Division, commended B5 Plus for its tax compliance and called upon other businesses and individuals to follow suit. He emphasized that taxes paid by businesses are not mere statutory requirements but vital sources of funding for public services and national development.

The Commissioner highlighted that taxes paid by businesses like B5 Plus contribute towards the provision of essential services such as roads, schools, hospitals, and security, benefiting everyone.

Dr. Yamborigya stressed that a robust domestic revenue base is pivotal for Ghana's pursuit of economic self-reliance, particularly as the country strives to diminish its dependence on borrowing and external aid. He pointed out that the state's ability to provide essential services and undertake development initiatives relies heavily on taxpayers fulfilling their obligations.

However, he stressed that taxpayers are not solely responsible, as government also plays an equal role in ensuring public resources are utilized efficiently and transparently.

The Commissioner affirmed that the GRA is committed to administering tax laws fairly, efficiently, and professionally to bolster confidence in the tax system. He urged taxpayers to maintain accurate financial records, file returns on time, and pay the correct taxes. Additionally, he appealed to consumers to assist the Authority in combating revenue leakages by demanding VAT invoices for applicable purchases.

Dr. Yamborigya commended B5 Plus for its role in building a stronger domestic economy and financing development priorities. The GH¢400 million contribution from the company exemplifies the connection between Ghana's industrial sector and domestic revenue mobilization, demonstrating how major players in the iron and steel industry generate economic activity while providing revenue to the state.

The Commissioner concluded by urging B5 Plus to continue its tax compliance, emphasizing that their compliance is a direct contribution to Ghana's development. He assured taxpayers that the GRA will continuously improve its systems and processes to make tax compliance more straightforward, equitable, and convenient.
