Argentina is ditching its favorite Davis Cup surface: here’s why

Argentina is abandoning its traditional clay court for a hard court Davis Cup tie against Turkey, marking a shift in strategy for the South American tennis team. The match will be played at the Ruca Che stadium in Neuquén, an indoor venue featuring a hard court surface. This change comes after Argentina's captain Javier Frana and the team players deemed it strategically prudent, taking into account the upcoming North American and Asian circuits, which are also played on hard courts.

Francisco Cerúndolo and Mariano Navone recently showcased their prowess on hard courts at the US Open, while Thiago Tirante reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati. Team sports director Eddie Fiumara highlighted that Argentina's players are more than just clay-court specialists and can excel on any surface. In fact, 70% of the tennis calendar is played on hard courts, with the goal being to familiarize younger players with these surfaces.

The AAT selected a medium-speed hard court, categorized as Category 3 by the ITF, balancing speed, bounce, and player comfort. The court will be installed at Ruca Che using specialized materials, a process requiring approximately six days for completion.
