Argentina is ditching its favorite Davis Cup surface: Here’s Why

Argentina is transitioning away from its longstanding tradition of playing Davis Cup matches on red clay courts. The Argentine team, set to face Turkey at the Ruca Che stadium in Neuquén from September 19 to 20, will face an indoor hard court surface instead. This change is driven by both sporting needs and a broader strategy for the development of Argentine tennis.

Team captain Javier Frana and the players chosen for the squad made the decision, with the timing of the tie being significant as it follows the North American swing and precedes the Asian tour, both of which are also played on hard courts. This move aims to keep the players in familiar conditions, avoiding the need for transition work.

The Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) sports director, Eddie Fiumara, emphasized that Argentine players are not just clay-court specialists and can perform at a high level on any surface. The choice to use a medium-speed hard court, classified as Category 3 by the ITF, reflects the AAT's goal of gradually integrating hard courts into Argentine tennis.

The court will be installed at Ruca Che by Spanish manufacturer GreenSet, utilizing a process that involves a protective carpet, interlocking wooden panels, a resin base, and multiple coats of acrylic paint, which requires around six days for drying and fine-tuning.
