Apple's New iPhone Camera Mode Promises to Prove Your Photo Isn't AI

Apple is rolling out a fresh "Reference Image" mode on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max cameras. This innovative feature creates an unalterable version of a photograph right from the moment it's captured, using the camera sensor to digitally sign the data. This new mode aims to provide users with a means to verify what the camera actually captured before any edits are applied.

As AI-generated images and videos become increasingly lifelike, various standards have been developed to label non-human-made content, like SynthID, C2PA, and Meta's Content Seal. Apple is taking a different approach by integrating authentication into its hardware. Developers can now access a Reference Image API across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which may eventually allow users to examine these digitally-signed photos in third-party applications.

Apple has announced that the iPhone 18 Pro series won't feature the Reference Image mode initially in the European Union, but users in the region will still be able to develop and view these images in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
