Apple Unveils A20 Pro as First 2nm Smartphone Chip

Apple announced the A20 Pro chip for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, marking the first smartphone to utilize 2nm process technology. The company touts the A20 Pro as an extraordinary chip that establishes a new benchmark in mobile computing. The A20 Pro boasts a 6-core CPU design, featuring two innovative super cores that are up to 20% faster than previous models and are claimed to be the fastest in any smartphone, akin to desktop class processors.

Accompanying the CPU are four new efficiency cores. The GPU has been redesigned with a 7-core configuration that delivers up to 40% faster graphics performance and greater memory bandwidth. The A20 Pro also includes new neural accelerators within the GPU, providing twice the FP8 performance compared to its predecessor, enabling the chip to execute large language models locally on the device.

Additionally, the A20 Pro features a supplementary Neural Engine, doubling the compute capacity of its predecessor, enhancing efficiency, and supporting 8-bit floating point math. Apple emphasizes that the redesigned Neural Engine is the most potent in the history of the A-series chips. The company highlights that the A20 Pro comes with the largest memory interface ever integrated into an iPhone.

Effective thermal management is crucial for harnessing the chip's full potential, as efficient heat dissipation determines how much of that performance can be sustained. Apple redesigned the chip's silicon packaging, describing it as custom packaging inspired by their M-series chips, which directly connects the silicon and memory to a vapor chamber for superior thermal performance.

Apple quantifies the A20 Pro's performance improvements, stating it offers 40% more sustained performance compared to the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro and twice the sustained performance relative to the A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro.
