Apple iPhone Duo in UAE: Prices hit $3,703 for foldable phone as release date revealed

Apple has unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at a special event in Cupertino, California. Priced at $2,000 (R32 061 excluding duties and taxes), the Duo is set to enter direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8. At its "Surprise and Shine" event, Apple showcased a device with the largest display ever on an iPhone, boasting a titanium build and a unique centre hinge that allows it to lie flat.

The Duo is slated for release in October, featuring the Apple Pencil, support for eSIM worldwide, and storage options up to two terabytes.

The foldable screen measures 7.6 inches, complemented by a smaller 5.4-inch exterior display. Powered by the A20 Pro chip, the device shares its architecture with the iPhone 18 Pro models. Pre-orders began on 16 October, with availability beginning three days later. Apple emphasizes the Duo's durability, extended battery life, and integration of AI features. Despite the premium pricing and limited Siri AI rollout, Apple aims to transform the smartphone market with this launch.

Alongside the foldable, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, both powered by the A20 Pro chip with advanced 2nm architecture. These models boast the longest battery life, up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max, and rapid charging capabilities. Camera enhancements include a 48MP fusion main sensor, 4K Dolby Vision HDR, and a new Apple Reference Image feature.

The phones start at $1,199 (R19 220 excluding duties and taxes) and $1,299 (R20 823 excluding duties and taxes), with pre-orders commencing 12 September.

Apple also refreshed its Watch and AirPods lines, enhancing integration with Siri AI. The Series 12 Watch features an improved Health Sensing System, boasting superior accuracy in heart-rate monitoring. The Ultra 4 Watch extends battery life to two days and comes in black, natural titanium, pearl white, and blue ceramic finishes. Pricing starts at $399 (R6 396 excluding duties and taxes) for the GPS model and $799 (R12 808 excluding duties and taxes) for the Ultra 4, with availability starting 18 September.
