All-Star Cast For Billie Eilish-Led ‘The Bell Jar’ Adaptation Revealed

Billie Eilish is set to make her feature film debut in Sarah Polley's adaptation of Sylvia Plath's 1963 novel The Bell Jar, according to Variety. The 22-year-old Grammy-winning artist will portray Esther Greenwood, a young woman grappling with anxiety and societal expectations in 1950s New York while working as an intern at a magazine.

This will be Eilish's first on-screen role, though she has previously made an appearance in the Amazon Prime series Swarm in 2023 and has won two Oscars for Best Original Song. The film, directed by Polley herself, marks a new chapter in the adaptation of Plath's only novel, which was first adapted for the screen in 1979. The all-star cast for the film includes Eilish alongside Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan, who plays Mrs. Greenwood, and Danielle Deadwyler as Esther's psychiatrist, Dr. Nolan.

Other notable roles include Ike Barinholtz as Lenny, a wealthy radio host in New York, Connor Storrie as Esther's blind date Marco, and Dylan Hawco as Esther's first boyfriend Buddy Willard. Jay Cee, the editor of Ladies’ Day magazine where Esther works, will be portrayed by Lily Taylor, while Ella Beatty plays Esther's best friend Joan, and Maggie Kuntz will portray Doreen, another intern in New York. The film is currently in production with no release date announced yet.
