Airlines scramble to dig out from tech problems that canceled 1,750 flights in the UK

Malaysia Airlines has set up extra flights and reimbursements for passengers impacted by a UK air traffic control issue that caused flight MH4 to be rerouted to Manchester Airport. The airline announced plans to run additional MH4D flights (Manchester to London Heathrow) and MH1D flights (London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur) to help affected travelers reach their final destinations.

Due to limited hotel availability at UK airports, passengers are advised to arrange their accommodation independently. The carrier promised to cover hotel costs up to £150 (RM821) per night, along with reasonable meal expenses and local transport, provided passengers retain itemized receipts. Stand-up comedian Jason Leong criticized Malaysia Airlines' crisis management after the MH4 diversion, stating that passengers and crew were left with no ground support.

Leong noted that passengers were kept in the baggage reclaim area for hours without any information about luggage, hotel arrangements or onward transport. He also criticized the airline's failure to provide logistical support, mentioning that flight attendants and pilots were also without accommodation or transportation at the airport.

Malaysia Airlines urged passengers to proceed to their accommodation without waiting for checked bags due to safety concerns from congestion and remote parking at Manchester Airport. The airline assured that all checked baggage would be securely transported to London Heathrow on flight MH4D. Passengers needing to repurchase essential medication due to missing baggage can submit receipts for full reimbursement.
