Airlines scramble to dig out from tech problems that canceled 1,750 flights in the UK

Britain's air traffic control system faced significant disruption on Wednesday, as technical issues forced the cancellation of over 1,750 flights, stranding passengers across the country. The head of the National Air Traffic Services (NATS), Martin Rolfe, was summoned to a meeting with the transport minister to address the aftermath of the problems that began on Tuesday.

The flight cancellations led to a backlog of delays, with airlines working to rebook stranded passengers and reposition aircraft left at the wrong airports. Budget carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air have called for Rolfe to consider resigning, citing this as the second major outage in three years affecting the air traffic control system.

Rolfe apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage, reaffirming that the U.K. air traffic control system remains one of the safest and most efficient in the world. He emphasized the system's commitment to passenger safety, stating that actions were taken only when necessary and that the systems were restored as quickly as possible.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander sought further clarification from Rolfe, calling for assurances that lessons would be learned and that aviation systems were up to the task. She expressed concerns about the continued safety and reliability of the country's air travel infrastructure in a post on X.
