2027: Kano gov warns politicians against hate speech, violence

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf cautioned political figures and their followers against hate speech, provocation, intimidation, and violence as the 2027 gubernatorial race officially commenced. At a press conference launching the campaign, Yusuf's Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, delivered the caution during a news briefing.

The governor urged contestants and supporters to focus the campaign on issues, stating that political competition should be based on concepts, policies, records, and programs instead of insults and character attacks. Yusuf emphasized, "Let us compete on the basis of ideas, policies, records and programmes rather than insults, intimidation or violence."

He also cautioned against property damage and any actions that could disrupt the current peace in the state, urging supporters to maintain discipline, respect opposing perspectives, and refrain from reacting to provocation that could endanger public order. The governor likewise implored media influencers, bloggers, traditional media professionals, and social media users to fact-check information before dissemination, avoiding the spread of false news, rumors, inflammatory content, and misinformation.

He called on law enforcement agencies to uphold professionalism, impartiality, and vigilance throughout the campaign period, while encouraging political parties and campaign organizations to work in tandem with the security forces and adhere to legal obligations. Yusuf assured residents that his administration would continue to deliver services and pursue development regardless of the political season.

He reminded Kano that it was greater than any political party or individual, stressing that politicians would remain united as citizens post-election. "Let us campaign with respect, compete with ideas, disagree without violence and prioritize the welfare of Kano over political differences," he concluded. The governor ended by praying for success for the candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
