Yobe Assembly approves second reading of Biomedical Engineering Institute Bill

The Yobe State House of Assembly recently provided accelerated consideration to a bill proposing the establishment of a Biomedical Engineering Institute in the state. The bill, presented by the executive branch, reached its second reading on Tuesday after thorough debates in the House. The debate was led by the Speaker of the House, Hon.

Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, who emphasized that the institute aims to enhance the state's healthcare system by equipping competent technicians for the proper maintenance and utilization of medical equipment.

Yusuf highlighted that the institute would offer both full-time and part-time programs, foster research and innovation, develop skilled manpower, generate employment opportunities for the youth, and contribute to the economic growth of Yobe. He added that if approved, the state would be the first in Nigeria to have such an institute.

During their contributions, members from various constituencies, including Bulama Bukar, Mohammed Isa Bello, Sanda Kara Bade, and Musa Lawan Majakura, echoed the view that the proposed institute is an investment in healthcare and human capital development.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, presided over the sitting, stating that the passage of the bill for second reading is a significant step towards resolving the issue of insufficient technical personnel to manage advanced medical equipment in health facilities across the state. After the debate, the bill was forwarded to the House Standing Committee on Higher Education for further legislative proceedings.
