Weija Dam spillage: Downstream residents ordered to evacuate

Residents residing along the south Densu River are urgently urging authorities to strictly regulate the discharge from the Weija Dam to mitigate the risk of flooding and associated hazards as the scheduled release approaches on September 9. This appeal comes after Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) issued a warning to vulnerable communities to evacuate ahead of the planned spillage.

The dam's water level has surged to 45.2 feet, nearing the 46-foot limit due to intense rainfall upstream and ongoing precipitation within the Densu River catchment and its tributaries. Areas potentially impacted include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, and Ada Kopey. GWL has advised residents to remain vigilant, adhere to evacuation orders, and refrain from actions that could endanger them.

The company has also called upon NADMO, the District Assembly, traditional leaders, Assembly Members, and other relevant parties to take preventive actions and prepare for potential evacuation. GWL has stated that it is diligently monitoring the situation and will continue to update the public as steps are taken to safeguard residents' well-being.
