Weija Dam spillage begins a day earlier than announced as GWL responds to rising water levels

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) began controlled water release from the Weija Dam a day sooner than initially planned due to an unexpected rise in water levels upstream. Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dennis Nartey Adjannor, revealed this precautionary decision was taken to avoid a sudden large discharge that could cause downstream flooding. GWL had announced spillage would commence on September 9, but the rising water prompted them to open a gate on September 8.

The decision was made to discharge water gradually, preventing a potential larger release that could lead to flooding. At 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, the water level stood at 13.78 metres (45.2 feet), with Gate #2 partially opened to six inches (0.15 metres). Adjannor emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation closely and warned additional gates could be opened if the water level continues to rise.

Communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, and Lower McCarthy Hill are at risk, and residents have been advised to stay vigilant, follow evacuation orders, and avoid dangerous activities.

GWL's Chief Manager, Stanley Martey, had cautioned residents living in unauthorized areas along the river to evacuate, fearing that a dam collapse could destroy their properties and pose a threat to their lives. NADMO is collaborating with local authorities and community groups to implement precautionary measures and prepare the public for possible impacts. The extent and length of the spillage will depend on the water flow into the dam, and GWL will provide further updates as the situation evolves.
