Volkswagen finds defence future for German plant amid major overhaul

Volkswagen reached a preliminary agreement on Monday to repurpose one of its German factories for defense production under new ownership. This marks the first time the automaker is exploring this avenue to address struggling plants that struggle to compete with cost-conscious Chinese rivals. The deal, involving the sale of Volkswagen's Osnabrück factory to Israel's Aurelius Capital and Lower Saxony, aims to save approximately 1,400 of the site's 1,800 jobs.

This move comes as Volkswagen announced a major restructuring plan to cut jobs and simplify its structure, driven by rising defense spending in Europe and the need to find alternatives for surplus manufacturing capacity. The deal also highlights how defense spending could play a role in absorbing excess automotive manufacturing.

Aurelius Capital and Lower Saxony, Volkswagen's second-largest shareholder, signed a letter of intent to take over the Osnabrück factory, where vehicle production is set to cease in 2027. Volkswagen envisions the factory becoming a hub for air defense systems for Germany and Europe, potentially involving the manufacture of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems' products.

While exact details of the deal remain undisclosed, the agreement could pave the way for additional defense-related projects, such as converting VW Amarok pick-ups into military vehicles or repurposing MAN vehicles from Volkswagen's Traton business. Defense production has emerged as a potential solution for underutilized automotive plants, with companies like Rheinmetall and Continental also pursuing similar strategies.

Under the proposed plan, Aurelius would acquire a majority stake in the site alongside Lower Saxony, whose premier Olaf Lies emphasized the factory's unique assets, including years of experience with complex products, precise manufacturing, and a strong, well-coordinated workforce.
