US Secretary of State Rubio arrives in Colombia to clarify China ties, sign minerals deal

On Tuesday, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Colombia to discuss critical minerals, civil nuclear cooperation, and the country's relationship with China. This marked the first visit by a cabinet-level US official since President Abelardo de la Espriella took office a month ago. The meeting focused on Colombia's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Chinese investments in critical infrastructure.

Rubio emphasized the shared interests in combating regional terrorism and economic engagements. Trade relations with China were reportedly on the agenda, with two sources confirming the topic. Colombia, rich in coal, nickel, and copper, is mapping reserves of metals vital for batteries and electronics, a market dominated by China.

The two leaders, along with Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar, planned to meet at an army base in Barranquilla. This visit was part of a three-nation tour, with subsequent stops in Ecuador and Peru. In Barranquilla, De la Espriella unveiled a new presidential office, symbolizing the beginning of a strategic alliance with the United States.

The Colombian leader stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship with both the US and China.
