US bans Canadian dairy, alcohol and motorcycles as trade war with longtime ally escalates

The United States has imposed a ban on various Canadian products, including alcoholic spirits, dairy goods, and motor vehicles, in response to Canadian retaliatory tariffs on American goods taking effect on September 29. US President Donald Trump accused Canada of discriminating against the United States and issued a series of executive orders detailing the import ban.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney stated in a video address that the shift away from the US as its largest trading partner would come at a cost. Despite both sides expressing a desire to strike a trade deal, negotiations have not resumed since collapsing in late August. The US is Canada's largest trading partner, with over two-thirds of Canada's total exports going to the US, while Canada is the US' second-largest trading partner after Mexico.

The trade war between the two countries has caused concerns among business owners on both sides, with expectations of rising prices and reduced customer numbers. The White House imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods last month, targeting sectors such as furniture, wine, sporting equipment, and fishing gear.

Canada retaliated by imposing equivalent tariffs on US goods like steel, clothing, and furniture. The White House claims that Canada is discriminating against US businesses by restricting the distribution of US goods while not applying the same restrictions to products from other countries.
