UK’s Prince George starts at Eton College

Prince George of Wales began his first day at the prestigious Eton College on Tuesday, accompanied by his parents, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. The 13-year-old prince, who is second in line to the throne after his father, was greeted by the school's headmaster, Simon Henderson, who wished him well, saying, "Welcome, good luck, enjoy it."

As the second in line to the British throne, George will complete his secondary education at the exclusive institution, which charges over £63,000 (US$85,000) in annual fees. The young prince has chosen to board at Eton despite its location just a few kilometers from his family home in Windsor, west of London. Following in the footsteps of his father Prince William and uncle Prince Harry, who both attended the prestigious school, George joins a long list of notable alumni, including 20 former prime ministers and figures such as actor Tom Hiddleston and James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

Established by King Henry VI in 1440, Eton is renowned for its traditions, including a distinctive uniform consisting of a black tailcoat, black waistcoat, white shirt, and bow tie, along with striped trousers. The school, which accepts around 1,350 pupils annually, charges significant fees and has maintained its esteemed reputation for centuries.

Tuesday also marked the fourth anniversary of the accession of George's grandfather, King Charles III, which was commemorated with a gun salute in central London.
