Ukraine's prosecutor general submits resignation citing political conflict

On September 8, Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko submitted his resignation, citing political reasons, according to a statement he made on Telegram. Kravchenko emphasized that his decision was not influenced by any external pressure and that he wanted to prevent the Prosecutor General's Office from being used as a tool for political confrontation. He expressed gratitude to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, for accepting his resignation.

Earlier in the week, Ukraine's anti-graft agencies, the National Agency for the Protection of Rights and Legal Protection (NABU) and the State Anti-Corruption Office (SO), revealed that they had uncovered a criminal organization involved in fraudulent call centers, which they believed was orchestrated by someone within the Prosecutor General's Office. However, Kravchenko firmly denied any involvement in the alleged scheme.

Kravchenko's resignation comes amid ongoing political turmoil in Ukraine, as it continues to fight Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. In July, Zelenskiy appointed Sergii Koretskyi as Ukraine's new prime minister, replacing Yulia Svyrydenko. Svyrydenko's tenure was marked by a corruption scandal, during which she was criticized for not taking sufficient action to address the issue.

Despite not being implicated herself, Svyrydenko was replaced due to the scandal's negative impact on her administration.

In addition to these changes, Zelenskiy also replaced popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov in July, just six months after his appointment. Fedorov, known for advocating military reform, had clashed with senior generals over strategy and procurement, leading to his dismissal.
