UK, France and Canada sanction Israeli West Bank settlements, in support for two-state solution

On Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee hinted at the possibility of retaliation from the United States against the United Kingdom over newly imposed trade sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements. The escalation comes ahead of British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband's anticipated statement in the House of Commons, where he is expected to impose a ban on the trade of goods and services from Israeli settlements.

Miliband's announcement marks a significant shift in Britain's stance on Israeli settlements, signaling a potential "comprehensive reset" of policy. This comes just two weeks before Prime Minister Andy Burnham's trip to New York for the U.N. General Assembly, where a possible in-person meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is expected.

Burnham and Trump discussed the "U.K.'s commitment to working towards peace and security" in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of the two-state solution. However, Trump's response to the sanctions remains uncertain. The move by the U.K. has been welcomed by many Labour MPs, who have called for stronger action against the Israeli government in light of recent actions in Gaza.

Nevertheless, concerns have been raised about the potential for increased antisemitic attacks against British Jews, with Labour backbench MP Peter Prinsley warning that opponents of Israel often fail to distinguish between Israeli government policy and the British Jewish community. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar threatened retaliation against the U.K. if it imposes the sanctions, stating that Israel has "tools" to respond.

The situation remains fluid, with potential repercussions for the already strained British-U.S. trading relationship.
