UK commits £100 million for Ukraine’s air defence

The United Kingdom announced on September 8 a £100 million ($135 million) air defense package for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering its defenses against potential Russian attacks over the winter. The aid package, which will be provided through NATO's Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), includes funding for Patriot missiles, large-caliber artillery rounds, and drones.

British Prime Minister Andrew Burnham and Defense Secretary Wes Streeting made recent trips to Kyiv to discuss the need for additional support from the U.K. as President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of this assistance ahead of the winter. Streeting's first visit to Kyiv as defense secretary followed a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv that killed 17 people and injured many others on August 5.

The U.K. has pledged to supply over 120,000 drones to Ukraine this year, with around 25,000 already delivered, including interceptor drones designed to counter Russian drones. The assistance package also follows the U.K.-led 36th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, involving nearly 50 countries providing military support to Ukraine.

Additionally, the U.K. and Ukraine agreed to enhance cooperation on artificial intelligence technologies to develop new military capabilities, including a deal for MBDA to release classified information on its U.K.-made components for the SCALP/Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile.
