Trump threatens to stop sale of Canadian Bombardier jets in US

President Donald Trump has threatened to halt the sale of Bombardier aircraft in the US unless the Canadian company begins manufacturing its jets within the country. The warning appeared in a post on Trump's Truth Social platform on Monday, with the president stating, "NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!" "If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank’."

The threat arises from a brewing trade war between the two nations and comes just hours before Canada is set to impose retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of US goods. Bombardier, a Montreal-based company, responded to the threat by asserting that it employs thousands of American workers and values its partnerships with American companies.

The company currently operates a factory in Kansas that builds special mission military planes, employing 3,500 American workers. Bombardier's jets are built in Canada, the US, and Mexico, and approximately half of its 5,100 aircraft are operated by US-based Bombardier customers.

In a statement, Bombardier did not directly address Trump's threat but emphasized its investment in American jobs and communities, stating, "Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers, and the communities in which we operate across the country." Bombardier's jets comply with the North American Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA in Canada, USMCA in the US), signed by Trump during his first term.

The company is a significant contributor to Canada's economy, having contributed C$7.4 billion ($5.4 billion; £4 billion) to the country's GDP in 2024.
