Three held after Karachi University professor assaulted at Safoora Chowrangi

Karachi police have apprehended three individuals following an assault on a senior University of Karachi professor and his nephew near Safoora Chowrangi, police disclosed on Tuesday. East Senior Superintendent of Police Zubair Nazir Sheikh informed Dawn that the victims were University of Karachi’s Islamic Learning Department head Dr. Professor Mohammed Arif Khan Saqi and his nephew, Mohammed Waheed Rehman.

According to Sheikh, the professor was en route to the university when the suspects, reversing their vehicle, collided with his car. SSP Sheikh stated that the police issued a letter for medico-legal procedures, subsequently registering a First Information Report (FIR) at Sachal police station. Aijaz Pathan, House Officer at Sachal police station, told Dawn that the suspects were influential figures who owned a restaurant in Safoora, and raids were underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Dr. Saqi recounted the incident to Dawn, stating that he and his nephew were traveling to the university when a double-cabin vehicle hit their car's bonnet and attempted to flee. When Dr. Saqi requested compensation for the damage, the suspects exited the vehicle and began assaulting his nephew. Additional gunmen arrived to join the assault, causing both Dr. Saqi and his nephew to fall to the ground and sustain injuries.

The suspects then forcibly transported the victims to a nearby eatery, where they were beaten again before disappearing.
