Sinkhole Appears on Newly Built Road in Lahore’s Johar Town

A significant sinkhole emerged on the recently built Structure Plan Road in Johar Town, Lahore, prompting questions about the road's construction and inspection standards. The 1.5-kilometer road, which links Shadiwal Chowk with Wapda Town Roundabout and Ghaffar Chowk, was finished around four months ago at an estimated expense of Rs.

455.9 million. Although the event did not result in any casualties, it has sparked apprehension among local inhabitants, especially given that comparable depressions have previously surfaced on Johar Town’s Main Boulevard during the monsoon season. Residents are demanding an exhaustive investigation to ascertain accountability and evaluate the road's construction quality.

LDA Director General Tahir Farooq, however, clarified that the road itself did not collapse. He blamed the sinkhole on the failure of a crown on a 20-foot-deep sewerage pipeline owned by PIA Housing Society. Farooq asserted that the LDA’s Engineering Wing was not accountable for the incident and reiterated that such occurrences can transpire on both recent and older roads.
