Ruto, Japan’s Princess Takamado push stronger climate and energy cooperation

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya and Japan are aiming to enhance collaboration in clean and sustainable energy as they deepen their partnership on climate action, trade and investment, according to President William Ruto. On September 8, Ruto met with Princess Takamado, a Japanese imperial highness, at State House, Nairobi, where they discussed expanding bilateral cooperation and tackling the escalating threat of climate change.

Ruto emphasized Kenya's appreciation for its long-standing relationship with Japan and underscored clean energy and climate action as crucial areas for closer cooperation. "We agreed on the urgent need to address climate change, expand clean and sustainable energy cooperation, and deepen trade and investment relations between our two countries," Ruto stated.

Kenya is striving to become a regional leader in renewable energy, attracting investment into sustainable infrastructure and green industries. During their talks, both countries acknowledged their "strong and mutually beneficial relationship" and committed to building upon their existing partnership for the benefit of their citizens.

Ruto noted that Kenya values its ongoing partnership with Japan and expressed enthusiasm for forging even stronger ties for the benefit of both nations. Japan remains a significant development and economic partner for Kenya, with cooperation spanning various sectors, including infrastructure, health, education, technology, and trade.

The two countries are also striving to bolster commercial ties, as increased trade and investment cooperation will support efforts to address climate change and foster sustainable economic growth. President Ruto reiterated that both nations will continue working together to fortify their partnership and advance shared interests in sustainable development, economic growth, and climate action.
