Russian strikes on Kyiv resume after pause for Witkoff and Kushner visit

Russian airstrikes resumed on Kyiv on Monday night, marking the third day of attacks since a three-day ceasefire was declared due to a visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, according to local authorities. The capital sustained damage to administrative buildings, warehouses, schools, and residential areas in six districts, resulting in at least 12 casualties and 10 injuries, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported.

The assault extended to the Odesa region as well. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes as "a complex attack" aiming to inflict maximum harm, while Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously ordered a ceasefire during Witkoff and Kushner's visit. Witkoff and Kushner had previously traveled to Kyiv and Moscow to hold talks with Putin over the weekend in an attempt to broker peace.

The Ukrainian foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, criticized Putin's "ballistic missiles" for contradicting his diplomatic efforts. U.S. special envoys Witkoff and Kushner visited Kyiv for the first time on September 6 as part of renewed U.S. peace efforts, with Witkoff stating that "substantive progress was made," including plans for additional trilateral talks.
