Qatar’s PM vows to prioritise China’s energy supply amid Middle East tensions

Qatar vowed on Tuesday to prioritize China’s energy supply and protect shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, as both nations coordinated to ease tensions in the Middle East. During a meeting in Beijing, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi underscored the significance of unimpeded maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Doha’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at securing freedom of navigation and a comprehensive agreement for regional peace. The two also discussed key regional developments, diplomatic initiatives, and expanded bilateral cooperation, while reviewing the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Qatar’s foreign ministry highlighted Sheikh Mohammed's statement that Qatar would overcome challenges, prioritize China's energy supply, and collaborate with China to create a prosperous "golden decade" for bilateral relations. Wang affirmed China's longstanding priority of relations with Qatar in its Middle East diplomacy, praising the growing political trust and cooperation.

He emphasized that China would continue supporting Qatar in defending its sovereignty, independence, and stability, while appreciating Qatar’s role in mediation and regional peace efforts. The talks followed Premier Li Qiang's visit to Beijing, where he pledged to deepen energy, investment, artificial intelligence, and diplomatic cooperation to ease Middle East tensions.

Wang outlined Beijing's vision for a "new regional security architecture," urging regional countries to be masters of their own destiny, reject external interference, and focus on economic development. He stressed that sovereignty and security should be respected, and that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable paths to resolving tensions.

Qatar expressed appreciation for China's impartial stance and support for promoting Middle East security. The discussions come amid ongoing regional tensions and diplomatic efforts to maintain the open Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for both countries' energy security.
