President Mahama appoints Abdul-Baasit Aziz-Bamba as Acting Director-General of Value for Money Office

President John Dramani Mahama has voiced his worries about Ghanaian footballers leaving the national league prematurely, which he fears is lowering the overall quality of the sport in the country. At a meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, with representatives from Nations FC, Medeama SC, and Ampem Dakoa Ladies, Mahama noted that the nation is losing talented players at an alarming rate.

"We're too quick to sell our players," he stated. "As soon as a player starts to show some promise, the scouts pick him up and whisk him away, which leaves the local league lacking in depth." Mahama called for measures to retain these young talents, suggesting that they be given more opportunities to play for the national team. This experience, he believes, would provide valuable exposure on the international stage, allowing players to mature and develop before attracting attention from foreign clubs.

The President envisions a scenario where, once these players have matured sufficiently, either through international exposure or local scouting, they can be poached by clubs.
