Practical Magic 2 review: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman conjure a sequel superior to the original

Practical Magic 2, the 2022 sequel to the 1998 film, proves to be a superior follow-up to its predecessor. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as the Owens sisters, Gilly and Sally, with added support from Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing. New cast members Joey King and Maisie Williams take on the roles previously played by Evan Rachel Wood and Alexandra Artrip. The film follows the witches as they navigate love, loss, and sisterhood, while embracing their magical abilities.

Despite initially appearing gloomy, Practical Magic 2 manages to be an entertaining and heartfelt story. After dealing with the aftermath of a previous curse, Sally becomes protective of her daughters, keeping them unaware of their magical heritage. This leads to Sally casting a spell to erase magic from their lives, causing Gilly to refuse any connection to the witchy world.

However, the film's plot takes a dramatic turn when Kylie (Joey King) falls for Gideon (Lee Pace), a classmate who struggles with his feelings for Sally's sister. Gideon falls into a coma, leading Kylie to embark on a quest for a cure in England. With the help of Professor Ian Wright, a dark magic academic played by Lee Pace, Kylie and the Owens sisters face various challenges and uncover the dark secrets surrounding their family's history.

Practical Magic 2 delivers an earnest romantic subplot, with Ian's presence adding a darker tone and an alluring allure. The film's shift in setting to England adds depth and danger to Kylie's journey. Director Susanne Bier brings a female gaze to the sequel, enhancing the overall experience with its vibrant color palette and exploration of the witches' world.
