Police link Labone bank robbery suspects to earlier attacks on customers

The Ghana Police Service has connected a bank robbery syndicate in Accra's Labone area to at least two previous incidents targeting bank customers. Surveillance on the gang began in April 2026 after police detected they were monitoring customers withdrawing large sums of money before attacking them. The suspects allegedly used master keys to break into targeted vehicles or entered them to steal cash and valuables.

In Tema, a woman lost GH¢50,000 to the group on May 17 after withdrawing from a bank. Later on June 11, members ambushed a young man at gunpoint who had just withdrawn money from a bank while on his way home. The surveillance operation intensified on August 13 when police were tipped off about the gang allegedly reaching Labone and Cantonments. They tracked a black Hyundai Tucson and an ash-coloured Toyota Highlander, eventually intercepting them around Zenith Bank, GCB Bank, and Ecobank in Labone.

During the raid, two suspects were killed, another escaped, and 49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi was apprehended. Police found a Blow F90 pistol and 13 other vehicle registrations in the Toyota Highlander. Investigation revealed the gang had imported vehicles into Ghana and swapped their Nigerian plates for Ghanaian ones to avoid detection. Maazi remains in custody while the police pursue other suspects still at large.
