PM Wong wants more private-sector leaders like Tan See Leng in Cabinet amid succession challenge

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed the desire for more private-sector leaders to join Singapore's Cabinet, in order to bring a different perspective and contribute to the government. He cited Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Tan See Leng as an example of the value that such leaders can bring. Dr Tan, who entered politics at the age of 55 after a successful career in the private sector, was praised for his experience in running businesses and dealing with challenges first-hand.

PM Wong emphasized the importance of recruiting leaders in their 40s, who have the time and opportunity to grow and take on larger responsibilities. He pointed out that senior civil servants and public sector leaders are often unwilling to leave their lucrative careers and take on political roles due to the significant reduction in income and increased scrutiny.

PM Wong also mentioned the challenges of recruiting from the public sector, as senior permanent secretaries are often unwilling to make the move to politics due to the differences in career paths and remuneration. He highlighted the need for succession planning, as the three most senior members of his team are nearing retirement age.
