Nova Scotia tables bill that would increase protections for some workers

Halifax - The government of Nova Scotia has introduced new legislation aimed at enhancing worker protections. Labour Minister Nolan Young presented the bill, which seeks to reduce the overtime threshold and expand overtime eligibility. The bill would lower the overtime threshold from 48 hours per week to 44 hours, allowing for more flexible overtime provisions.

Additionally, the government would gain new tools to recover unpaid earnings owed to workers. However, the proposed legislation would not extend to certain sectors such as construction and agriculture. Another amendment in the bill addresses tip theft, ensuring gratuities are paid to workers who earn tips. The changes to overtime and tip protection rules are set to take effect on April 1, with wage recovery measures implemented through separate regulations.
