North Korea and Russia open first road bridge linking both countries

The first road bridge linking Russia and North Korea has officially opened, facilitating smoother transportation of cargo and passengers across the Tumen River border. Pyongyang's state media announced that the bridge will be utilized for personnel exchanges, tourism, and trade. However, Ukrainian investigative organization Truth Hounds claims the bridge is primarily intended to establish a covert military logistics corridor to aid Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The bridge's opening comes amidst strengthened ties between Russia and North Korea since the beginning of the Ukraine war. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin referred to the bridge as a "new symbol of friendship," while North Korea's Prime Minister Pak Thae Song called it a "historical event." The bridge can handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,323 people daily, according to Russian state news TASS.

Construction of the kilometre-long bridge, which includes several new access roads, a border checkpoint, support infrastructure, and parking facilities, began in 2025 after the agreement to build it was made during Russian President Vladimir Putin's 2024 visit to North Korea. The bridge took 495 days to complete, including delays.

Russian tourists have gradually begun visiting North Korea since the bridge's completion, initially in the capital Pyongyang and the beach resorts of Wonsan-Kalma. Despite the UN banning countries from using North Korean labor, around 10,000 North Koreans are currently working in Russia's construction sites and logging camps under the guise of student visas.

The speed of bridge construction reflects the volume of trade activity between the two nations, according to Victor Cha from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) think tank.
