NFF crisis: FIFA to visit Nigeria as threat of ban looms

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have requested that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) pause its ongoing electoral process as they investigate recent developments within Nigeria's football administration. In a letter sent on September 7, 2026, to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA and CAF expressed their intention to examine the legal, governance, administrative and electoral aspects of the situation.

This intervention follows a period of instability at the NFF, involving the resignations of the president, general secretary, and several members of the federation's executive committee. The recent poor performances of Nigeria's national teams, with the Super Eagles failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons missing out on the 2027 Women's World Cup for the first time, have added to concerns over the country's football landscape.

Additionally, several youth national teams have failed to secure spots in major tournaments. FIFA and CAF referred to a meeting held at FIFA's Zurich headquarters on September 1, involving representatives from the two organizations, the NFF administration, and the Nigerian government. However, no conclusions have been reached yet.

FIFA and CAF have appointed Ikpeme as the primary point of contact between the NFF and the two governing bodies until further notice. They have instructed that the electoral process be halted, with no further decisions taken until their assessment is finished. The request aims to maintain the current situation while FIFA and CAF gather facts and consult relevant stakeholders.

The two bodies plan to dispatch a joint assessment team to Abuja as soon as possible, meeting with NFF officials, committee members, and representatives from the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission. This mission aims to gain a thorough understanding of the recent developments and determine if any issues need further examination under FIFA, CAF, and NFF regulations.

The assessment's findings could result in recommendations or proposals presented to their decision-making bodies. However, FIFA and CAF have stressed that the process remains open-ended, and no assumptions should be made about the eventual actions that may be taken. This move puts Nigeria's football administration under heightened scrutiny and effectively halts the NFF's electoral timetable as FIFA and CAF scrutinize the federation's leadership and governance situation.
