FIFA, CAF halt Nigeria football elections over governance crisis

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have suspended the Nigerian Football Federation's (NFF) electoral process, putting their planned elections on hold until further notice. The decision comes as FIFA and Nigeria's National Sports Commission reportedly reached an agreement on proposed reforms to the country's football administration, though FIFA has denied claims of a final agreement.

FIFA's Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, stated that the governing bodies are "assessing the legal, governance, administrative, and electoral implications arising from the current circumstances within the NFF."

This suspension follows a major shake-up within Nigerian football, with NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several members of the Executive Committee resigning amid criticism of the country's football performance. The crisis stems from a series of disappointing results, including Nigeria's national teams failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in their history.

Additionally, several youth national teams have also missed out on major continental and global competitions.

The recent intervention by FIFA and CAF arrives at a challenging time for Nigerian football, highlighting the urgent need for reform and addressing the underlying issues that have plagued the country's football administration.
