New bridge signals closer Russia-North Korea ties

On Monday, Russia and North Korea inaugurated the first road bridge across their shared border, a project they hailed as a key step in strengthening their growing relationship. Spanning the Tumen River, the 1 kilometer-long bridge features two lanes and is expected to accommodate up to 300 vehicles daily, with a newly constructed border crossing point facilitating the passage.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song attended the ceremony simultaneously via video link. Mishustin expressed his confidence that the enhanced transportation infrastructure would significantly bolster trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.

Pak hailed the bridge's completion as a significant event, adding a new dynamic to the overall bilateral cooperation. He noted that North Korea has been supplying ammunition and troops to support Russia's war against Ukraine, receiving economic and military assistance in return.

Notably, North Korea has been receiving Russian tourists since February 2024, as pandemic curbs begin to ease. The bridge's opening is expected to further promote tourism, human exchange, and commodity circulation between the two countries. Both nations already share a railway bridge and air service. In 2024, they agreed to construct a bridge for automobiles over the Tumen River, construction of which began the previous year.
