Nepra adjusts quarterly tariff: Consumers to pay additional Rs12.67bn

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a positive tariff increase of Re0.5194 per unit for the second quarter of 2026, which will raise consumers' electricity bills by approximately Rs12.669 billion. This decision, issued on Monday, follows requests from power Distribution Companies (Discos) for a periodic tariff adjustment, as per provisions in the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act, 1997.

Nepra's decision, communicated to the Ministry of Energy on September 4, 2026, accounts for factors such as variation in capacity charges, variable O&M costs, Use of System Charges, Market Operator Fee, Fuel Cost Adjustment impact on transmission and distribution losses, recovery of Power Purchase Price on incremental units, and reversal of costs for certain entities. The adjustment will be spread over three months, from September to November 2026, at a consistent rate of Re0.5194 per kWh.

Exempt from this increase are lifeline consumers, units billed under the incremental consumption package, and prepaid consumers. Nepra has extended the tariff increase to K-Electric (KE) consumers, requiring them to pay the same rate during the same period. If a bill has already been issued before the notification, the adjustment can be recovered in the following month. The regulator has also urged concerned entities to comply with court orders while implementing this decision.
