Nach der Landtagswahl: Schulze will Verzicht Sachsen-Anhalts auf MPK-Vorsitz

Following the CDU's victory in the Saxon-Anhalt state election, Minister-President Sven Schulze (CDU) is advocating for stepping down from the scheduled position of Minister-President Conference (MPK) chairman starting in October. He proposed this in a letter to his colleagues, stating that the timing of the state election coincides with the start of the MPK.

The MPK decision of March 12, 2025, requires Sachsen-Anhalt to take the chairmanship on October 1, 2026, for a year. Schulze also noted that the current situation in the state is not entirely straightforward, prompting the proposal for a decision on the MPK chairmanship. "Uncertainty about the government formation's progress", "Given the election outcome on Sunday, the resulting seat distribution in the state parliament, which took place on October 6, and the subsequent uncertainty about the government formation in Sachsen-Anhalt, the assumption of responsibility for the chairmanship on October 1, 2026, is not fitting under these conditions", Schulze writes in the letter to the incumbent MPK chairman Gordon Schnieder (CDU) from Rhineland-Palatinate, according to media reports.

He therefore asks the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to initiate a vote with the co-chairmanship of Lower Saxony and "preferably introduce a proposal for the next steps in the regular CdSK", Schulze writes further. CdSK refers to the vote among the heads of the state chancelleries of the federal states. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate confirmed receipt of the letter, stating that the expressed concern is being discussed among the states.

The letter was cited by the "Handelsblatt", the "Rheinische Post", and the Funke-Mediengruppe. In the MPK, the state and federal government leaders discuss issues affecting the federation and the states and represent their positions to the federal government.
