Zwei Tage nach Landtagswahl: Machtprobe in der CDU – Schulze setzt sich durch

Two days after the state election, the CDU faction in Saxony-Anhalt is embroiled in a power struggle, with Sven Schulze emerging as the frontrunner. In a vote, Schulze defeated incumbent Guido Heuer with a margin of seven to eight votes. Schulze claimed that both candidates received positive feedback, describing the narrow result as evidence of strong representatives in the state parliament faction.

The intense voting over factional posts within the CDU highlights the current divisions within the party. This is further illustrated by the election result of new Parliamentary Business Manager Stefan Ruland (CDU), who received eight votes in favor and seven against, without a challenger. Despite this, Schulze remains optimistic about uniting the faction.

The faction is aware that the situation has changed, Schulze noted. Schulze emphasized that there would be no discussions with the AfD, reiterating that the CDU faction would not engage in talks with the AfD. The CDU's poor performance in the state election, losing 25 seats and now holding only 15 seats in the new state parliament, has fueled the power struggle.

CDU Chairman Schulze has announced a re-election of the CDU Landesvorstand for late November or early December. Schulze now intends to become deputy faction leader in the Bundestag, a position held by Sepp Müller, who is a staunch opponent of Schulze. Müller's offensive comes after rumors circulated that deputy Landesvorsitzende André Schröder might take the top post.

Müller is determined to prevent this, as he views any collaboration with the left as detrimental to the CDU. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has entered the fray, criticizing Müller for undermining Schulze's leadership. Merz's intervention comes as the CDU faces a crucial period of two upcoming state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, which could determine Merz's political future.
