N. Korea calls first Russia road bridge a sign of tighter ties

North Korea heralded the inauguration of its inaugural road bridge spanning the Tumen River with Russia as evidence of deepening ties, according to state media reports on Tuesday, as the conflict in Ukraine prompted Western-backed countries to grow more interdependent. The bridge, constructed to withstand increasing volumes of goods and passengers, complements the rail and air connections between the two nations.

The inauguration ceremony on Monday underscored the significance of the bridge as a catalyst for enhanced bilateral collaboration, as reported by North Korean official Pak Thae Song to the official KCNA news agency. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin affirmed in a video conference that the opening of the first automobile route would further solidify the bond between the two friendly nations.

The bridge's operation enables the secure passage of diverse modes of transportation and human movement, thereby reinforcing a crucial infrastructure component for economic collaboration between North Korea and Russia. North Korea dispatched a sizable contingent of troops to Russia in 2024 to deter a potential Ukrainian invasion of the Kursk region, while Kyiv has accused Moscow of utilizing North Korean missiles in its nighttime attacks.

The two countries inked a defense pact in 2024 that stipulates mutual assistance in the event of an attack. North Korea, one of the globe's most secluded and authoritarian states, restricts the movement of its citizens and closely monitors incoming travelers. Russian tourist visits to North Korea have risen in recent years, albeit Pyongyang occasionally shuts its borders without prior notice.

South Korea's central bank estimated in July that North Korea's economy expanded by over three percent for the third consecutive year in 2025, attributing the growth to the expansion of economic cooperation with Russia as a major catalyst. The bank's official additionally stated that North Korea's gross national income benefited from a significant surge in foreign currency earnings stemming from the deployment of its troops in Russia.

Ukrainian rights organization Truth Hounds had previously cautioned that the new bridge could serve as a direct conduit for the movement of North Korean military personnel, construction crews, and officials into Russia, with Russian technology and resources flowing in the opposite direction.
