More flight delays expected after hundreds cancelled by air traffic control glitch

Flight delays are anticipated to persist on Wednesday following an air traffic control glitch that canceled hundreds of flights across the United Kingdom. The disruption affected tens of thousands of passengers, with up to 1,000 flights grounded due to a glitch impacting the air traffic control provider, Nats. Nats' CEO, Martin Rolfe, expressed regret, stating that a full investigation would be conducted after the issue took longer to resolve than anticipated.

The fault was widespread and extended to airports in Scotland and Ireland, which also reported disruption. Airlines such as EasyJet and British Airways canceled over 200 and more than 100 flights respectively. Nats' flight processing system, responsible for processing flight plans and operational information, was the source of the technical issue.

While the problem has been resolved, backlogs are likely to cause continued disruption. Ryanair and Wizz Air have called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nats, deeming the organization unfit for its current role. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander urged continued monitoring of the situation and assured that lessons would be learned to ensure aviation systems are adequately prepared.
