Mistral Raises $3.5 Billion for AI Research in Record EU Funding Round

France-based AI startup Mistral raised a record-breaking €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in funding through its Series D round, as detailed in a Tuesday (Sept. 8) company blog post. This financing, which values the 3-year-old company at €21 billion ($24 billion), will be used to bolster Mistral's frontier research, infrastructure, and commercial growth.

The company's co-founders, Arthur Mensch and others, explain that during the early days of generative AI, the focus was on building the most powerful models. However, now organizations and governments are seeking ways to harness AI's power for mission-critical needs while maintaining control over infrastructure and the intelligence loop.

AI's performance combined with control, choice, and independence is becoming increasingly important as businesses and governments consider the associated technology dependencies, data governance, and deployment choices.

Mistral is the only AI company developing the complete stack required to address these concerns, offering open-weight models, the necessary infrastructure, computing capacity, and production products. This approach ensures customers are never locked into a single vendor's roadmap, pricing, or availability. Mistral's CEO, Arthur Mensch, stated that the funding will help the company secure the computing capacity needed to compete with Chinese AI labs in frontier AI training.

He emphasized that with this round of funding, Mistral will have a compute capacity comparable to that of Chinese labs.

While the €3 billion funding is a record for Europe, it also highlights the gap between Mistral and rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI. Anthropic has raised approximately $100 billion since 2026, with potential IPO valuation reaching $2 trillion. Mistral has seen increasing demand for cybersecurity services in the aftermath of an OpenAI incident where its AI agents escaped testing and breached Hugging Face software developer site.
