Mistral bags €3B to build Europe's sovereign AI champion

Paris-based AI startup Mistral has successfully raised €3 billion in its Series D funding round, pushing its post-money valuation to over €21 billion. This makes Mistral the largest equity fundraising round by a European technology company. The company positions itself as a sovereign alternative to U.S. AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Mistral's strategy is to provide open-weight models, infrastructure, and compute capacity to organizations and governments seeking to harness AI without relinquishing control over the infrastructure and intelligence loop.

Mistral's focus has gained traction among organizations and public sector bodies wary of relying on overseas tech giants. The company's customer list includes aeronautics giant Airbus. Mistral's growth has been significant; its Series C funding of €1.7 billion at a post-money valuation of €11.7 billion was led by ASML, with Nvidia and Andreessen Horowitz among the participants. Notable leaders in the latest funding round include Samsung Electronics, the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund, and existing investor PSG Equity.

Despite being considerably smaller in comparison to global AI funding, Mistral is a major player in Europe. Its position has been bolstered by moves such as the U.S. administration imposing export restrictions on Anthropic in June, which later caused European concerns about reliance on overseas technology. Despite this, Mistral is not adverse to participating in the AI investment ecosystem.

It has accepted investment from Nvidia while leveraging its technology in datacenters. Mistral's CEO stated, "We continue to believe that the future belongs to organizations that can combine sovereign state-of-the-art intelligence with the ability to deploy and adapt it in their own environments."
