Mahama releases GH¢684,000 from Sports Development Fund to back Medeama, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa

President John Dramani Mahama has allocated a total of GH¢684,000 (approximately US$60,000) from the government's Sports Development Fund to support three Ghanaian clubs participating in continental and regional competitions. The funds were distributed as follows: Medeama SC received GH¢342,000 (US$30,000) for the CAF Champions League, Nations FC obtained GH¢228,000 (US$20,000) for the CAF Confederation Cup, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies were granted GH¢114,000 (US$10,000) for the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

The cheques were presented to the clubs at a ceremony at Jubilee House on Tuesday, 8 September, 2026, prior to their respective continental assignments.

Mahama acknowledged that the Sports Development Fund is still in its early stages with limited resources, but expressed his intention for the fund to grow and provide larger contributions to the clubs as it expands. He also emphasized the importance of private-sector co-investment to bolster the fund's financial resources. During the presentation of the awards, Mahama stressed the need for greater investment in women's football, highlighting the success of the women's teams despite receiving less support.

He specifically mentioned Ampem Darkoa Ladies as a prime example of a women's team making significant strides. The assistance comes as Medeama SC prepares for their CAF Champions League second-leg match against TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi, Nations FC gears up for their Confederation Cup return leg against FC Diarra in Ghana, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies strive for the WAFU B title and a CAF Women's Champions League qualification.
