Liberal Party joins Colombia’s government coalition

The Liberal Party has announced its decision to join the congressional coalition of Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella. This move comes after "extensive deliberation and arduous debate" among the party's representatives, senators, and leadership. The Liberal Party, which supported De la Espriella's presidential bid, now joins the coalition following their extensive deliberation and debate.

Despite some disagreements among members of their caucuses with the current administration, the Liberals acknowledge De la Espriella's ability to stimulate economic growth, build a talent pool, and restore security and respect for institutions.

The Liberal Party's decision provides the government with broad support in Congress, while the opposition led by the leftist Historic Pact Party is marginalized. In the Senate, De la Espriella's right-wing coalition can count on the support of 63 out of 103 lawmakers, and in the House of Representatives, the coalition consists of 123 out of 183 lawmakers.

The Historic Pact, which won the elections and became the biggest party in Congress, has lost the support of the left-liberal Green Alliance party and can now only count on the support of 28 senators and 44 representatives.

The opposition party has attempted temporary anti-government alliances with the far-right Democratic Center party of former President Alvaro Uribe. This development highlights the shifting political landscape in Colombia, as the Liberal Party's decision to join the government coalition highlights the complex dynamics at play within the country's political system.
