Joho forms committee to resolve Tata Chemicals Magadi compliance dispute

Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has appointed a high-level technical committee to tackle unresolved compliance issues that resulted in the suspension of Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited's operations. The committee, co-chaired by the Principal Secretary for Mining and Tata Chemicals Magadi's Chief Executive Officer, will conduct an in-depth review of the outstanding matters and draft a report to present to Joho.

The key concerns include mineral beneficiation and in-country value addition, community benefits and royalty payments, unresolved land issues, and the possibility of multiple mineral extractions in the area. The committee will also scrutinize outstanding matters related to Kajiado County Government. Joho emphasized the government's commitment to working collaboratively with investors while strictly adhering to Kenyan laws and protecting the welfare of its people.

The committee's formation follows the government's suspension of Tata Chemicals Magadi operations due to compliance issues with various regulations and community obligations. Tata Chemicals Magadi is a significant producer of soda ash, a key ingredient in glass, detergent, and other industrial products. The committee's findings will guide the government in determining the appropriate course of action.
