Inmarsat Nexuswave Earns Bureau Veritas Cyber Security Type Approval, Advancing Secure Multi-Network Connectivity For The Digital Vessel

Inmarsat Maritime, a subsidiary of Viasat, has obtained Cyber Security Type Approval for its NexusWave service from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV). NexusWave offers fully managed, bonded multi-network connectivity for vessels, enhancing secure, resilient, and future-ready communication in the maritime industry. This approval specifically validates NexusWave's compliance with the International Association of Classification Societies’ (IACS) Unified Requirement E27 (UR E27), marking a significant step in Inmarsat Maritime's strategy to deliver secure connectivity for the digital maritime sector.

The approval follows a recent ClassNK Cyber Security Type Approval, providing additional assurance of NexusWave's security measures. BV's Type Approval highlights Inmarsat Maritime's capability to meet diverse classification frameworks, enabling consistent NexusWave deployment across global fleets while complying with vessel-specific class requirements.

The approval process evaluated NexusWave's onboard ICT architecture, network equipment, orchestration processes, and edge infrastructure, assessing the integrated system's ability to support cyber resilience. Gert-Jan Panken, General Manager and Vice President of Inmarsat Maritime, emphasized the growing demand for cyber resilience in the maritime industry, stating that the approval reflects the company's commitment to helping customers confidently adopt digitalisation while maintaining security, reliability, and compliance.

Christophe Chauviere, Senior Vice-President at BV, noted that cyber resilience is crucial as shipboard systems become increasingly connected. BV's assessment focused on the integrated system's design, ensuring NexusWave meets the requirements of UR E27, providing independent assurance that cyber resilience is considered throughout the solution's development.

NexusWave intelligently connects multiple underlays, such as GEO, LEO, LTE, and L-band, into a single managed service, with security features like network segmentation, encryption, and centrally managed capabilities. BV's Type Approval further validates Inmarsat Maritime's position as a trusted partner in secure maritime digitalisation, supporting customers in leveraging always-on, multi-network communications amid evolving cyber security and classification requirements.
