DNV and GRSE sign advanced shipbuilding MoU

At the SMM trade fair in Hamburg, DNV and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) agreed to a strategic collaboration on advanced shipbuilding, digitalization, green technologies, and competence development. This partnership aims to bolster India’s maritime and defense sectors. DNV will provide classification, technical advice, and regulatory insights on naval, defense, and specialized vessels, as well as international naval standards.

The agreement covers modular construction, design optimization, and the development of advanced vessels like autonomous platforms, next-generation offshore patrol vessels, and polar research vessels. DNV will also assist GRSE in enhancing its repair and refit infrastructure for both domestic and international naval clients. Additionally, the collaboration will focus on electric and hybrid propulsion ferries, low-carbon naval auxiliary vessels, and alternative fuel options, including hydrogen and ammonia.

The agreement also includes lifecycle emissions assessments and compliance with Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and international environmental standards. DNV CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the current industry landscape. GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Cmde P R Hari emphasized the focus on innovation, sustainability, and global excellence, aiming to contribute to a stronger and more self-reliant Indian maritime and defense ecosystem.

DNV will also bring its expertise in AI-enabled ship design, digital twins, and cybersecurity. The two organizations will run joint training programs for GRSE professionals, Indian naval architects, and surveyors to strengthen India’s maritime supply chain and build capacity, particularly in the Eastern Indian maritime cluster.
