Iceland summons US ambassador after Trump posts map with island as part of US

Iceland has summoned the US ambassador in response to comments made by President Donald Trump on social media. The image shared by Trump appeared to show the island nation as part of the United States. Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir conveyed a clear message to the US Ambassador that the image was wholly inappropriate.

Trump had posted a map of North America, with the entire landmass labeled the "United States of America." The map included Canada, Greenland, Mexico, much of Central America, the Caribbean, and Iceland. Iceland relies on the United States for its security, as it has not maintained a military since gaining independence in 1944. The country is a founding member of NATO and has a bilateral defense agreement with the US.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the Greenlandic government and people have repeatedly expressed their desire not to be part of the US. She reiterated this message during a visit to Greenland, commenting on the map.
