Iceland summons US ambassador after Trump posts map with island as part of US, says ministry

Iceland's foreign ministry has summoned the US ambassador after President Donald Trump posted a map on social media that appeared to show the island nation as part of the United States. Foreign Affairs Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir delivered a firm message to the US Ambassador, stating that the image was entirely inappropriate.

Trump's post, which included a map of North America with several countries colored in with the US flag, without any further explanation, raised concerns for Iceland. The subarctic island, which has not maintained a military since gaining independence in 1944 and is a founding member of NATO, relies on Washington for its security.

Iceland's reliance on the US was further emphasized by Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who emphasized that the Greenlandic government and people have repeatedly stated their opposition to any American control. This comes amidst a recent trade dispute between the US and Canada, which has also contributed to Iceland's unease.
