Hurricane Lowell expected to pass near one Hawaiian island and cause major rains statewide

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has ordered the closure of schools and government offices on the westernmost islands of Kauai and Niihau as Hurricane Lowell approaches. The storm, currently a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to bring damaging winds, potential mudslides, tornadoes, dangerous rip currents, and up to 16 inches of rain to certain areas.

Kauai County, which includes the major islands of Kauai and Niihau, has been under a hurricane warning issued by the National Hurricane Center. With a population of over 73,000 on Kauai and fewer than 100 on Niihau, the county is bracing for the threat. A portion of the expansive Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument is also included in the warning.

Governor Green urged residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official emergency instructions to keep roads clear for emergency crews. He emphasized the importance of staying away from shorelines, avoiding floodwaters, preparing for power outages, and monitoring updates.

The storm's core is expected to pass over or just west of Niihau late Monday and early Tuesday. Although wind speeds may weaken, the storm is anticipated to remain a hurricane as it comes closest to the islands. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Oahu, home to nearly 1 million residents, as well as Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Oahu and Maui could see isolated rainfall totals of up to 10 inches, while the Big Island might experience up to 12 inches of rain.
